Bob and I ran into each other on the bikes yesterday and are wounded. We were looking in the opposite direction when our handlebars hit. Bob went down. I was watching him fall when all of the sudden the ground was coming to my head. (we think his wheel caught my bike) I reached out my hands to brace the fall but still hit my chin on the road and scraped my hand. Both pinkies are very sore. There's a chunk out of my hand by my other pinky. I have a bruise on my chin.
Bob has a scrape on his elbow and his ankle is bruised.
A guy in a car stopped to make sure we were okay and two joggers. Bob got up right away but I was still on the ground. I asked, "What happened?" I didn't really mean what but how. I was so shocked that i ended up on the ground, too!
Our bikes are okay. we road them home. Bob's mirror is smashed and my mirror is askew. Bob's front brakes had to be disconnected because they wouldn't stop grabbing the tire rim. We will go in Monday to have them adjust that and anything else because we have a bike ride on Saturday to go on (29 miles).
When we came back home and told the kids, they couldn't help but laugh at us. They were sympathetic but we looked like a pair, both of us bleeding in spots and me with ice on my hand and my chin. (Bob didn't realize his ankle was hurt until the middle of the night when it throbbed.)
I'm thankful it wasn't any worse! We've got to pay more attention!!!
We had just been talking with a fellow bicycler at an open house. He was saying how he loves to ride but he's afraid of traffic. After we crashed and were back on our bikes, we looked at each other and said, "We don't have to worry about traffic, it's each other we have to worry about!"
Today I babysat for a friend's kids while she did come cleaning and packing for a move at the end of the month. Here's our day. We had fun but I'm tired after running after them all day. I think I set a record for going up and down the stairs! Alana is 4 and Josiah is 2.
I was so surprised that they both age the broccoli!
Alana loved putting things in this basket with a lid and carrying it around.
Alana was pretty scared of the dog at first but by the middle of the day, she was willing to touch her.
Enjoying a snack of peanut butter cold cereal for Josiah and cheese cubes for Alana.
At one point they were both up on the couch being dogs like Cinnamon.
We let them strum Bob's guitar for a little bit. They got real excited about that.
While I was getting the clothes out of the dryer, I set them up on the counter. They didn't want to get down after that!
Only one bad thing happened while I was catching up on Facebook and typing a comment about how the kids are being so good I can even use my laptop when I realized they were really quiet. I went to find them and they were playing in the water that Bob had set out to water his plants he's growing. They had poured the rainwater from the milk jug into a cookie sheet and were splashing around. Alana was pretty wet by the time I found her. (It was only a few minutes and no harm done, just wet everywhere around them!)

My brother in law purchased a computer for the first time. He had never been around a computer before and he's over 45 years old. He had never learned to type on a typewriter, either. Recently he asked me to show him how the keyboard works like what you push for a space, what program to use if you want to type a letter, how to get capital letters and use the symbols above the numbers, etc.
The other night he called Breanna to ask about a word that had a red line under it in his Microsoft Works document. Breanna told him the red line meant it was spelled wrong. He said it was someone's name and was spelled right. Breanna explained that he could add it to the dictionary so it wouldn't be red anymore any time he used it. She told him to right click on the word. A menu would come up and he could choose "add to dictionary." He had her explain it all again to make sure he understood her.
He called back and said it didn't work. She went through it again. "You right click on the word and add it to the dictionary." He said he did write click and nothing happened. He had written the word "click" in the middle of the word. He couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. We had a good laugh about how little he knows about computer jargon.
It's hard to believe there are people out there that don't know all the jargon we use everyday without thinking.
I went to the Goshen Ice Sculpturing Festival competition on Saturday, January 3. I took progress pictures of someone (Mike Evans he said his name was) making a Pegasus. It was so interesting to see the thing take shape as I went around to the others and came back to him. They have a total of 3 hours from start to finish to be eligible for the contest. I spent about 2 hours there so he probably has another hour before he has to be done. The weather was in the 20's. It's better if it is below that because it freezes better. None of them liked the sun. One said, "The sun does weird things to our sculptures.
Dustin was board stiff it looks like or just tired. I don't know which. I'm sure he was cold. He only had on a sweatshirt hoody with a cap.
Below are some finished sculptures that were made the night before. Can you tell what they are?
We have a tradition. Every Christmas when we have our family together, we fix meal together. It all started with egg rolls. We would all work together to make, roll, and fry them. The fun was in working together to get the meal on the table. After a few years, we got really tired of egg rolls. When Amber came back from Nepal and India, we decided to do an India themed meal. Everything we fixed was from India. I can't even remember what we made but Amber knows. The next year we did an Irish theme with Irish Soda Bread and a stuffed chicken. We've done a Middle East theme with Falafol (spell?) and hummus. We try to find a meal that will get everyone involved. It has to have a lot of steps. This year our theme was "soup in a bread bowl." We had wanted to do French but ended up just making the soup and bread bowls and adding a salad and an easy dessert. This is the first year we didn't really have a theme. We started the bread bowls too late so they didn't have enough time to rise. They ended up not being big enough to use as bowls but they sure were good with our potato ham chowder. As you can see from the pictures below, we really do get everyone involved. It turned out to be a wonderful tradition. We were all sad that Matt wasn't able to join us. He couldn't get off enough days to come.
The soup before we added the cheese sauce.
Jezra mixing up the pudding for the dessert.
Kyle making the salad.
And smelling his hand after adding spices to the soup.
Kyle working on salad and me working on the bread bowl dough.
Breanna peeling the carrots for the soup. She's bending over the waste basket to peel them.
Bob contemplating how to cut the carrots.
The graham cracker crust for the dessert. It was good dessert but nothing spectacular.
Jezra playing hide and seek with the camera.
Wow, looks like a busy day! read more
